3 Sales Qualification Models: BANT, CHAMP and MEDDICC

Many salespeople spend too much time speaking with prospects who are unlikely to buy. As a result, they may spend hours on meetings, proposals, and follow-ups that lead nowhere. This is why sales qualification matters.

A clear qualification framework helps salespeople decide:

  1. Is this opportunity worth pursuing?
  2. Is there a real problem to solve?
  3. Who makes the decision?
  4. Is there enough urgency?
  5. What should happen next?

There are many sales qualification models available. Three of the most widely used are BANT, CHAMP, and MEDDICC.

Each framework serves a different type of sales environment.

1. BANT: Simple and Fast Qualification

BANT stands for:

  1. Budget
  2. Authority
  3. Need
  4. Timeline

BANT is useful for shorter sales cycles and simple products or services.
However, it can become too rigid when sellers ask about the budget before understanding the customer’s problem.
Therefore, use it as a guide rather than a strict checklist.

Typical BANT questions include:

  1. Has a budget been approved?
  2. Who is involved in the decision?
  3. What problem are you trying to solve?
  4. When would you like to implement the solution?

When BANT works best

This model works well for shorter sales cycles and simple products or services.

  1. shorter sales cycles
  2. simple products or services
  3. high volumes of enquiries
  4. early-stage lead screening

However, it can feel too rigid when sellers ask about the budget before understanding the customer’s problem.

Therefore, use it as a guide rather than an interrogation checklist.

2. CHAMP: Start With the Customer’s Challenge

CHAMP stands for Challenges, Authority, Money, and Prioritisation.

Unlike BANT, CHAMP begins with the customer’s challenge.
Because of this, the conversation feels more customer-focused.
In addition, it helps the salesperson understand the problem before discussing money.

Typical CHAMP questions include:

  1. What challenges are you facing?
  2. How is this issue affecting your business?
  3. Who needs to be involved in the decision?
  4. How important is solving this problem now?
  5. Has funding been discussed?

When CHAMP works best

CHAMP is useful for:

  1. consultative sales
  2. solution selling
  3. professional services
  4. B2B conversations
  5. situations where the customer may not yet know the right solution

Among the three sales qualification models, CHAMP often feels more customer-friendly because it focuses on understanding before qualifying.

3. MEDDICC: For Complex B2B Opportunities

MEDDICC stands for:

  1. Metrics
  2. Economic Buyer
  3. Decision Criteria
  4. Decision Process
  5. Identify Pain
  6. Champion
  7. Competition

MEDDICC gives sales teams a clearer view of complex deals. For example, it helps them identify the final buyer, decision process, internal champion, and business impact. However, it may be too detailed for short or simple sales.

Typical MEDDICC questions include:

  1. What measurable business outcome is expected?
  2. Who controls the final budget?
  3. What criteria will be used to compare solutions?
  4. How will the final decision be made?
  5. Who inside the organisation supports the project?
  6. What competing options are being considered?

When MEDDICC works best

Therefore, it is most useful for enterprise sales, long sales cycles, and complex technical solutions. It provides strong deal visibility. However, it may be too detailed for simple sales.

Which Sales Qualification Model Should You Use?

There is no single best sales qualification model for every team.
Instead, choose the method that fits your sales cycle, customer type, and deal size.

Use BANT for simple and fast qualification.
Use CHAMP when the conversation should begin with the customer’s challenge.
Use MEDDICC for large and complex B2B deals.

In some cases, your team may combine parts of different models. For example, CHAMP can support early discovery, while MEDDICC can help manage a complex opportunity later.

Ultimately, the purpose of sales qualification is simple: focus your time on the right prospects, create value, and move suitable opportunities forward.
